What is Harmonic Content Morphing (HCM) Synthesis?

Harmonic Content Morphing or HCM is a new synthesis method is based on a large and expandable repertoire of standard waves like pulse, unique synthetic waveforms as well as resynthesis waves like trumpets, organs, pianos and voice samples. These waves can be modified in real-time by FM modulation, altering its harmonic structure, syncing, waveshaping, transposing the wave by one or two octaves and adding it to the original wave, altering its harmonic structure, syncing, compressing or expanding the frequency domain of the spectrum, making the wave fat using only one (!) oscillator by transforming each wave into a hyper-wave, selecting some cycles of a sample and moving through them over time (comparable to wavetable synthesis) … Any modification of a wave can be modulated producing lively shimmery sounds (recall: with only one oscillator!). In total there are more than 30,000 different spectra available for combination and modulation.

Example: You can take a Hammond organ, FM modulate the organ with a sawtooth, create a hypersaw and amplitude modulate this signal with a BPM synced vocoder drumline.

What is ADPCM?

ADPCM is a compressed WAV format and stands for Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation which compresses from 16-bit to 4-bit for a 4:1 compression ratio. It’s a ITU-TS standard technique for voice encoding and compression. It allows an analog to be carried within a 32Kbit/s digital channel.

This method of encoding sound data files takes up less storage space than the regular PCM format used by WAV and AIFF files. ADPCM comes in more than one flavor: IMA ADPCM is used on the Sony MiniDisc to cram more data onto a smaller platter; Microsoft ADPCM is used as part of Windows canon of audio codecs. Many MP3 players use ADPCM for their voice-recording feature.

Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a modulation technique invented by Alec Reeves in 1937. It is a digital representation of an analog signal where the magnitude of the signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals. Every sample is quantized to a series of symbols in a digital code, which is usually a binary code. PCM is used in digital telephone systems. It is also the standard form for digital audio in computers and various compact disc formats.

Artificial Audio LATENCY Bundle is a tool for measuring and compensating latency, purpose-built for Logic Pro (Logic Pro is a registered trademark by Apple Inc).

The bundle contains the LATENCY DETECTOR and the LATENCY COMPENSATOR. The LATENCY DETECTOR is, as the name suggests, a tool to measure delay times and analyse latency. Most plug-Ins require a given amount of time to process an audio signal, therefore only allowing the signal to pass with a certain delay. This delay is known as latency. Most sequencers, however, like Logic Pro, have a mechanism to offset latency, ensuring that all tracks are perfectly synchronised. However, this compensation does not work when using the I/O Plug-In to route signals to and from external audio hardware.

The latency induced by I/O Plug-Ins is not deduced and cannot therefore be automatically compensated. The sequencer obviously cannot know what is happening to the signal in the analogue world. To find out the latency of an I/O Plug-In, the sequencer would have to measure the time required for the signal to leave the sequencer output and reappear at the input.

Using the LATENCY DETECTOR this measure- ment can now be carried out exactly and the determined latency value can be used in the LATENCY COMPENSATOR to make up for the delay.

AIFF is default sound file fomat on Macintosh or Mac computers and was co-developed by Apple based on Electronic Arts Interchange File Format (IFF) in order to store high-quality audio and musical instrument information. AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format and is functionally identical to Windows WAV.

It is widely used in professional programs that process digital audio waveforms and it can include both sampled sound and MIDI data. It can be mono or stereo, at sampling rates up to 48kHz. AIFF files are compatible with QuickTime.

M-Audio Premium Vintage Keyboards was produced by accomplished producer/remixer Chris Griffin (Madonna, The Corrs). Premium Vintage Keyboards contains two world-class instruments - the very ones used on countless recordings by Grammy-winning artists. The set includes a rare Wurlitzer Model 214 Blacktop, identical to the famous model 200a with the addition of four 8″ speakers, a larger amplifier, and more direct output choices. It is the model of choice for studio recording, and only a few studios own them. Four velocity layers and key-release damping make this instrument completely authentic and ‘fast’ to play. The Clavinet is a vintage D6 model from the mid 1970’s. Restored and tuned especially for this disc, it was sampled in the A/C pickup configuration for the most versatility. The multi-samples include three velocities and the all-important key-release ‘pluck’ that many other sampled instruments lack.
