Mark Vail is an authority on audio vintage technology. His books “Vintage Synthesizers” and “The Hammond Organ” are famous among the vintage sounds lovers. Containing full color pictures and microphone placement diagrams, this book gives you facts and trivia about each of the featured instruments, as well as detailed info on every piece of vintage kit used in the recordings.

All instruments, Steinway Upright, Challen Studio Piano, Hammond RT-3, Mannborg Harmonium, Schiedmayer Celeste, Mellotron M400 and Premier Tubular Bells were recorded in Studio Two (where The Beatles recorded most off their hits), using the original Abbey Road Studio vintage equipment and Propellerhead’s Hypersampling method.

I think the next refill from Propellerhead should be Strings 2 created using the same Hypersampling method in order to be in same league with their Reason Drum Kits 2, Reason Pianos and the, already soon to be released, Abbey Road Keyboards reason refills.

If you already own Abbey Road Keyboards then you should know that Propellerhead released Abbey Road Keyboards 1.1 with the following additions:
- Lots of new presets: Standard presets, style patches and the well sough after producer patches(these flexible patches are created from a producer/mixing engineers perspective and geared towards the mixing situation containing all necessary tools at hand)
- ReWire templates: ReWire Templates in the form of pre-wired Reason Songs (rns) as well as Combinator patches were added.
- Fixes and changes: Abbey Road Keyboards 1.1 also contains a number of adjustments and fixes to bring the ReFill even closer to perfection.

I believe that everyone that creates music has to go through this vintage sounds love phase. It’s very important to know the sound of the past successes. Many still love it today (myself also) and rely on it to add more spice to their tracks. But, from my point of view, the best way to use use the vintage sound is to twist it and to create a totally new different sound out of it using today’s technology (like Propellerhead did) resulting in a rich and original compositions. Reason Electric Bass Instruments:

• Fender Jazz Bass (1968): String type: roundwound. Playing style: fingered. One of the most recorded bass models of all times. This particular instrument is in original condition with no parts exchanged.
• Fender Precision Bass (1965): String type: flats. Playing style: fingered. The Fender Precision bass was the first mass-produced electric bass model and is probably the most best-selling electric bass of all times. The first ‘P-bass’ shipped in 1951 and it’s still being manufactured today.
• Gibson Les Paul (1969): String type: vintage roundwound. Playing style: fingered. It’s an American medium scale bass with British sound manufactured between ‘69 and ‘71. The body is made out of solid mahogany, set 3-piece mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard. Due to its heavy weight the Les Paul bass is more popular in the studio than on stage
• Rickenbacker 4001 (1974): String type: roundwound. Playing style: Picked. Rickenbacker guitars and basses have very unique design which make them easy to spot wherever they appear. The very popular 4001 model first came out in 1961 and this particular red/white Rickenbacker 4001 bass was manufactured in 1974.
• Gibson EB-0 (1970): String type: roundwound. Playing style: fingered. The short scale EB-0 is one of Gibson’s most popular bass models and was manufactured between 1959 and 1979. The design is very similar to the popular Gibson SG electric guitar.
• Kay Hollowbody (1963): String type: flats. Playing style: Picked. The Kay Hollowbody electric basses were sold on mail order in the US and were quite inexpensive. Because of the low price the Kay bass could be found almost anywhere in studios across the US and has appeared on many recordings over the years.
• MusicMan Stingray Fretless (2001): String type: flats, 5-string. Playing style: fingered. The MusicMan StingRay first came out in 1976 and was designed by Leo Fender. It was one of the first production electricbasses with active electronics. It featured a 9V battery to power the built-in preamp and EQ.
• Fender Precision Bass (1978): String type: roundwound. Playing style: picked.

Reason Electric Bass – Preset Patches: These are the basic, instrument specific Combinator patches for various mic/amp combination.
Reason Electric Bass – Producer Patches: Producer-made, mix-ready bass sounds.
Reason Electric Bass – Style patches: These are Ready-made patches styled for different types of music: Pop, Rock, Funk/Disco, Reggae, Electronic, Hip hop/RnB. These patches come with a full set of effects and other signal treatments to bring out the characteristic genre-centric sound.
Reason Electric Bass – Template Patches: Empty, pre-routed patches for building advanced bass/amp/mic combos. Using these as a starting point, you can build your own sounds using every thinkable (and most likely some unthinkable too) combination of instrument, microphones and amplification.
Reason Electric Bass – Effect patches: Stomp box type bass effects that make full use of Reason’s effects and routing powers. Most of the effect patches make use of Reason’s Combinator device to give you a complex set of effects and routings by loading a single patch.

Most of airwaves broadcasting radios, also allow their listeners to stream online. This is a great achievement because if travel to some other zone or country you can still listen to your favorite radio if you have a laptop with you and a connection to internet!

Also, there are radios that are completely on Internet and as an example I can tell that I’m a big fan of Soma FM for a few years now. Soma FM is an independent, commercial-free and listener-supported internet radio, with 11 unique channels featuring underground electronica, chill out, ambient groove, downtempo, lounge, space music, indie rock and alternative rock, broadcasting from San Francisco. Rusty Hodge is the founder of SomaFM, a professional radio DJ that also developed software for broadcasters, multimedia, and founded Hodge Interactive to put radio and TV stations on the web.

I specially like their Groove Salad channel, which is a nicely chilled plate of ambient beats and grooves as they say . I discovered a lot of good music and artists by listening to Groove Salad for example Sigur Ros, Boards Of Canada, Ulrich Schnauss etc. They stream audio in a mp3 format (128k, 56k, 24k), wma format (128k, 32k) and aacPlus format (48k).

Just as a side note, Groove Salad was one of my inspirations for LOOPSalad V1

According to Accustream Imedia Research, in 2007 online internet radio (live streaming channels and individual track plays) generated 4.85 billion total listening hours, that’s 26.1% more than in 2006, generating a revenue of $92 million from advertising.

In 2007, SomaFM averaged about 5 million listener hours a month and the number is growing with an average of 6.4 million listener hours per month since December 2007. If those numbers are right, then 1.23% of all net radio listening is to Soma FM! (via Rusty’s Blog) This is pretty impressive, congratulations Soma FM!

Today I’ve received a newsletter email from them with several news and since it passed some time since Bram sent one, it’s worth being taking in consideration:

1. Freesound has now over 500,000 active members. Now, that’s something … this site is getting closer to a social networking monster, but with people that have a passion for the sounds.
2. Freesound is close to 50,000 free samples (45734), that’s about 1 audio file per 10 people right? So if you have some original sounds you want to share with others please go for it and let us know … we also did our part
3. Freesound is looking for universities and institutions who can help them with mirroring the content of the website. If you have a lot of bandwidth and a spare server lying around, please contact Freesound here.
4. Another great news is that Google Research gave Freesound a 50,000 USD research grant, last year in December. This is a no-strings-attached proposal, so they decided to start a complete rewrite of Freesound, meaning that Freesound version 2.0 is close.

A Guy Called Gerald is best known for his work in acid house scene from the late ’80s and for the track Voodoo Ray. At that time, he specialized in techno music produced using equipment such as the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer and the TR-808 drum machine.

His latest album called Proto Acid / The Berlin Sessions, released in August 2006 is a continuous mix album and is a definite return to the dance floor. It was created entirely in Reason!

iBooks

Features common to the line like “feed forward” (NEW) and “feed back” (OLD) gain reduction methods selectable on the front panel, provide a choice of “that old way”, or “the new way” of compression, for the highest level of flexibility in signal gain control. The “old way” or Feed-Back method is what most of the classic compressors used for the gain control circuit. The “new way” gain reduction is more typical of the newer VCA type compressors that rely on RMS detectors for the gain control voltage.

There is a “SOFT”/”HARD” switch for an “over-easy” type compression resulting in a very natural, uncompressed sound or a typical sharp knee type that lends itself to a much more severe limiting effect.

The Threshold control sets the initial operating parameter. The 527 can be operated with signal input levels from +10 dBu to -20 dBu.

Google Nexus One – Availability and Future Plans
Nexus One is initially available from the Google web store in the US without service for $529 or starting at $179 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile USA. In the near future, Verizon Wireless in the US and Vodafone in Europe plan to offer services to customers in their respective geographies. Today, consumers can go to www.google.com/phone to learn about the Nexus One and place an order.
