Celemony Direct Note Access for Melodyne

Celemony Direct Note Access for Melodyne was introduced at Musikmesse 2008, marking a whole new age in audio editing. With Direct Note Access it is possible for the first time to edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material. Possible applications range from the simple correction of errors to the complete refashioning of harmonies and timing. The first product to feature the revolutionary Direct Note Access will be Melodyne plugin 2, which is due for release in late summer.

Just watch this Direct Access Note video tutorial and be amazed, it’s the work of a genius, nothing less:

With its unique editing possibilities and outstanding sound quality, Melodyne has for years been regarded worldwide as the leading audio tool for pitch correction and the refashioning of timing and melody. With Direct Note Access, the Munich software house Celemony is now offering the next stage in its evolution: access (including the full range of editing possibilities) to individual notes within recordings of polyphonic instruments.

Like Melodyne itself, Direct Note Access is a development that will change forever the way you handle audio. In the field of images, it has long been possible with the right software not only to correct the tiniest blemishes but also literally to create new realities: pictures that are utterly believable but show us something that in fact never existed. Direct Note Access will give Melodyne users comparable freedom in the field of audio. With Direct Note Access, Melodyne will allow forms of access to audio material that were unthinkable before - ranging from subtle correction to recomposition.

Celemony Direct Note Access - Polyphony
Polyphonic material with Direct Note Access: The audio material after detection is spread out in the Melodyne Editor in such a way that the user can see the notes of the chord at their respective pitches and edit them individually

Direct Note Access makes possible fascinating and enormously useful types of intervention in the audio material that were unthinkable before, ranging from subtle correction to re-composition. So a Melodyne user can, for example, correct a wrong note within a piano recording, tidy up the timing of the individual notes of a chord and even retune an out-of-tune guitar after the recording has already taken place. These possibilities place existing recordings in a completely new context and at the same time enhance to an immeasurable extent the value of material from sampling libraries.

Celemony Direct Note Access features:

  • Access individual notes in chords and polyphonic audio: see them, grab them, edit them;
  • Audio, not MIDI: while editing single chord notes is common for MIDI, it is a world premiere for audio recordings. A patent is pending for their innovation;
  • Examples of use: tune a guitar after recording, correct harmony vocals that are out of tune, or fix their timing, turn major chords to minor (and vice versa), switch tone scales, mute single notes, remix volume levels, etc. - all after the performance is already taped
  • All Melodyne tools available: pitch shifting, time stretching, formants, amplitude etc.
  • available in Melodyne plugin, Version 2, first (scheduled for Autumn 2008); will also be integrated in future updates of other Melodyne editions
  • Upgrade options: benefit from being a registered Melodyne user

Celemony company founder and Melodyne inventor Peter Neubacker said: “We are delighted, with Direct Note Access, to have made a reality something of which we — and others too — have long dreamed. The access to, and ability to edit, individual notes within polyphonic audio material is the logical continuation of something that has always been our aim with Melodyne: to offer users a musical form of access to the content of their audio material that is as intuitive and far-reaching as possible and that can serve equally well for making corrections as for the creative refashioning of material.

The first Celemony product to include Direct Note Access is Melodyne 2 plugin, which specializes in correction and is due for release in Fall 2008.
